This assessment is the type that is completed throughout each lesson to see how the students are comprehending the material and will determine if I should move onto the next lesson as a teacher or if I should extend the lesson another day. Examples that use in my classroom are exit slips, thumbs-up if you understand, and classwork activities. At the end of the lesson, after using formative assessment, I will know if my students were able to understand my lesson or if I need to go over the information with some other students or the class as a whole.

Summative Assessment is the type of assessment that is usually completed at the end of units or chapters. These types of assessments are completed after a few weeks of learning a particular area of a subject. The purpose of this type of assessment is to see if the whole class understood the material that was taught the past few weeks. If formative assessment is done at every class and the students are honest in completing their necessary responsibilities as a student, most should be prepared to complete the summative assessment.
